Is ChatGPT a Dud?
By Bruce Barbour - December 2023 (Version 1.2)
Introduction
I have
recently been nominated to lead a discussion group on
philosophy. The alternative was for the group to disband. Since
I am in no way qualified to lead a group discussion in this area
I need all the help I can get. So I thought I might use ChatGPT
3.5 to assist me.
The way the group will run is that I will play a Youtube video
or a number of Youtube videos on a particular topic and then put
a couple of questions to the group for discussion. So I don't
need a huge background in philosophy - though more would
definitely be useful.
One of the most time consuming parts of this is selecting the
video from Youtube. This is one place where I thought I could
use Chat GPT 3.5 to assist. What I was looking for was simply
the next step up from a normal internet search engine. Any
search engine will give me a list of videos related to the topic
searched for. However these are not ranked or evaluated in a
comprehensive manner. For me to look at the videos, to rate and
select one or two to use is very time consuming. What I wanted
was for ChatGPT do some preliminary evaluation of the videos -
to check that the video covered the topic accurately and well. I
thought this was something it should be able to do. Most of the
videos on YouTube have transcripts which ChatGPT could read and
evaluate.
One of the topic ideas I was thinking of for the discussion
group was Buddhism. So I asked ChatGPT to name a number of
reasonable videos on the subject. It duly came back with a list
of approx ten. I then got it to narrow the list down to three as
I did not want to have to wade through ten. This all looked very
encouraging. The names of the videos sounded on point. HOWEVER
the problem was THE VIDEOS DID NOT EXIST. It seems to me that
ChatGPT did not know the answer so it just made something up!
Anyway - the conversation with ChatGPT is below. None of the
links it provided worked. And I tried to search for the video
name in the YouTube search engine and couldn't find the videos -
though I gave up after looking for about five of them.

Hello. Please suggest a number of YouTube Videos that give a
good description of Buddhism for people who have no background
in the religion. Preferably 10 to 15 minutes long.
ChatGPT
Certainly! Here are some YouTube videos that provide a good
introduction to Buddhism for beginners, each around 10 to 15
minutes long:

the depth and nuances of Buddhism are vast, and exploring
further resources or reading books on the subject may enhance
your understanding.
Bruce
Did you list those videos in the order you consider to be the
best first?
ChatGPT
No, the order of the videos provided is not based on any
specific ranking. The list was created to offer a variety of
introductory videos on Buddhism that cover different aspects of
the religion. Each video has its own approach and style, so you
can choose the ones that resonate with you or explore multiple
videos to gain a well-rounded understanding. Feel free to watch
them in any order that suits your preferences!
Bruce
Please list the top three.
ChatGPT
Certainly! While opinions on what makes a "top" video can vary,
here are three videos that are generally well-received for
providing a good introduction to Buddhism:
1. "Buddhism Explained: Religions in Global History" by
Overly Sarcastic Productions
Watch here
2. "Buddhism 101: The Eightfold Path" by ReligionForBreakfast
Watch here
3. "A Simple Explanation of Buddhism" by Jason Espada

These videos cover key concepts in Buddhism and are presented in
an accessible manner for beginners.

Outro
Here is
the link to the actual
conversation in ChatGPT 3.5. I would have forwarded it to
OpenAI so they could improve the system only I could not find a
link to do that. So I just have to whinge into the abyss of the
WWW.
This has shown me that ChatGPT 3.5, while not being a dud, it
certainly has some significant limitations. I might still use it
for some parts of course development. But this will certainly
make me more wary. And I will be having words with ChatGPT when
next I go on line!
As they say in Buddhism - "All life is suffering."
